What are your top 5 beach destinations in the UK

We are tantalisingly close to the summer holidays – for children at school, it is an especially exciting time. Exams will soon be over and weeks of freedom from classrooms and nightly homework awaits. We imagine they’re counting down the days until the last bell of the term rings – we certainly did when we were their age.

And for adults (with or without children) the summer offers all sorts of possibilities. For families it’s a chance to reconnect and spend quality time together and for those without children, the warmer weather offers the ideal chance for a getaway. If you’re thinking about a UK ‘staycation’ this summer, here’s where we think you should go.

The Cotswolds

Is there anywhere more quintessentially English than the Cotswolds? It’s a picture-perfect part of the country and an idyllic place to enjoy a summer holiday. Filled with historic houses such as Berkeley Castle and Blenheim Palace as well as offering kid-friendly attractions like Cotswold Wildlife Park and Cotswold Water Park, it offers the tranquillity of the countryside along with plenty of activities to keep little ones occupied.

What would the summer holidays be without an ice cream enjoyed by the seaside? Clacton-on-Sea, found in Essex, offers a traditional seaside pier packed full of things to do. With arcade games, rides and even an aquarium, it has to be one of the most comprehensive piers in the country! If you’re looking to create some classic seaside memories, Clacton-on-Sea should be on your radar for this summer.

Situated on the Kent coast, Margate is another favourite for those looking to see the sea this holiday season. As well as the fantastic coastal setting, Margate offers cobbled lanes filled with art galleries, markets and plenty of fabulous eateries. Margate Museum is worth a look, too – it’s housed in the second-oldest building in the town and includes displays that range from pieces of WW1 Zeppelin to an Iron Age burial pit.

Home to Windsor Castle and close to London, Windsor is a market town with plenty of history. Explore St George’s Castle, take in a show at the Theatre Royal Windsor or enjoy an afternoon on the River Thames, taking in the sights by boat. If you’re keen to learn more about the history of Windsor then we suggest a walking tour with a knowledgeable guide to bring you up to speed.

Known for its naturally hot spa water, Roman history and inspiring architecture, Bath is without doubt one of our favourite UK destinations. Book lovers can visit the Jane Austen Centre and learn more about the author’s famous heroines, shoppers can enjoy a bustling and vibrant high street and no trip to Bath would be complete without a Sally Lunn bun. For a city, it’s a manageable size for younger ones but packed to bursting with plenty to fill your days.

It might not be time to pack your bags just yet but it’s certainly time that you booked your summer getaway if you haven’t already. All five of these fantastic UK spots are reachable by coach and Mayday Travel will be happy to help you finalise your travel plans, whether it’s for a day trip or you’re looking to hire a vehicle for a full holiday.
